Columbus City Council discuss TxDOT updates, food trucks

COLUMBUS – The City Council met in regular session Feb. 13.

COLUMBUS — The City Council met in regular session Feb. 13.

City Manager Donald Warschak reported that sales tax for the city in February was $214,082.72. He said this is an increase from last year which was $183, 195.60.

Warschak also said the Tx-DOT project for U.S. Route 90 East River Bridge has shifted traffic to the new bridge and that the existing truss bridge has been taken out of service. The city said they have contacted TxDOT regarding what the speed of inbound traffic should be.

Warschak said the city has completed a cost estimate for the softball and baseball park restroom renovation project around $100,000. The city said it will submit their application for funding consideration to the CCIDC and will start working once funding has been approved.

Columbus Trash-Off Day is April 1. The event is sponsored by the Garden Club. The club said volunteer registration and supply distribution will be held at the Columbus Visitors Center on April 1st. Volunteers can also register from March 1 – May 31 via phone or text.

Tracy Lillie, Chairman for the Planning and Zoning Commission, spoke about the proposed ordinance for mobile food vendors. One of the items in question from the council regarded the exclusions clause. Place 3 City Councilwoman Paige Sciba suggested that everyone should have to get a permit, but that the city should determine and enforce the fee. Another part of the ordinance that was also in question was determining which vendor is considered mobile. The council said that within 90 days or three months, the food truck or trailer should move.

The Planning and Zoning Commission will work on revising the ordinance.
