The Columbus Lady Cardinals just had their All-District team announced and now they have two players on the Regional team.

Karlee Mathis and Anaya Gardner were both selected to the regional team because they played each game like their last and earned their spot.

Mathis averaged 10.8 points a game while bringing in four rebounds and recording 5.4 assists a game. Mathis’ offensive ability was talked about all season long but her ability to get inside and grab rebounds as a guard was something that separated her.

She was a ferocious rebounder and knew how to get her teammates out in space so while she could score and had a beautiful jump shot, she knew how to move the ball to an open teammate for a higher chance to score.

She rarely left the floor for the Lady Cards being that floor general that the Lady Cards leaned on heavily throughout the season. Mathis’ legacy as a senior is a strong one and she will be a player that team talks about for a while.

The good news for Mathis is she is going to be leaving the team in capable hands.

Mathis is passing the torch to Gardner and rightfully so. Gardner has morphed into a very consistent and dominant threat on the offensive end of the floor.

As a freshman Gardner averaged 20.6 points a game at the varsity level. She can shoot every single shot from layups to three-pointers, she has outstanding handles and can also create her own shot.

That’s very valuable to have a freshman that can do all of that and play a heavy workload of minutes. But not only is she a great offensive player but she averaged seven rebounds a game.

She would run down the floor, score, then hustle back secure the rebound and run down the floor again and score again. Teams had trouble stopping her all season long and with the Lady Cards losing a few key seniors they are very happy to know that Gardner will be around a little bit longer.

Congratulations to these two ladies for all they accomplished this season. They played hard and earned the right to say they
