The Rice Raiders are building something special with their basketball program and just got a vote of confidence from the district.
The Raiders had five players selected to the All-District teams and the names on this list truly earned their spot.
Before we get to the rosters there was one player on Rice that stuck out all season long and can now call himself MVP. Robert Bennett was named the Co-Offensive MVP for the district and rightfully so.
This young man had everything in his bag from a three-point shot, mid-range, layups, elite vision on the court, crossovers and he’s even elevated to dunk a few times.
Bennett was unstoppable on the offensive end and there is a reason why he brings the ball up the floor for Rice every possession. The guy is a wizard with the ball in his hands.
His ability to snatch up rebounds and get second opportunities or just feather the ball into the hoop Bennett made it look so simple. He keeps defenders guessing and on the off chance the defender guessed correctly, he always has an out that he sees to ensure they maintain possession.
Bennett always looked to the perimeter whenever he got in trouble and always found one of the next two players selected to the first All-District team.
Jon Woods and Jalen Porch were big parts of the Raiders team this past season and were selected to the first All-District team because of it. Woods was a very consistent shooter for the Raiders, being the perfect catch and shoot complement to Bennet’s style of play.
Porch, however, was a leader and he led by example. He was a guy that not many people noticed because he was always doing the right thing.
On a team that likes to play fast, Porch made sure all the little details were being taken care of especially defensively. He can also shoot the ball very well and use his size on the offensive end to get inside draw fouls and score easy buckets.
Last but certainly not least the Raiders had Dyren Johnson and Devron Bennett named to the second All-District team. This duo anchored for the Raiders this season.
Coaches never had to worry about those guys because they knew what they were going to bring every single game.
Johnson brought a feistiness on the defensive end that frustrated teams while also bringing athleticism on the offense end to help extend leads. Devron Bennett was just a tank for the Raiders on the defensive end of the floor.
If teams thought, they could come in and out rebound that guy they were sorely mistaken. Devron played with tenacity, and he outworked many opposing teams. He used his size to help establish his position and once he was set, there was no beating him.
The Raiders now have even more confidence to build on heading into their next season where they are looking to have a deeper playoff run.
