The Columbus Cardinals had a great start to their week picking up their first district win of the season, but things hit a wall when they participated in the La Grange tournament over the weekend.

The Cards went 0-4 at the tournament but kept all but one game close against bigger schools, it gave them a good idea of where they are as a team, and they look ready to build steam as their district schedule starts.

As stated, the Cards got their first district win of the season over Industrial. It was a road game but felt like a home game because the Cardinals’ fans were loud and proud.

The Cardinals were able to feed off that energy and got heavily on both sides of the ball early.

Kaleb Kuhn stuck out like a sore thumb during the game against Industrial while on the bump for the Cardinals. Pitching is one of the most valuable spots for many if not all teams because great pitching can take you far and Kuhn proved it.

Kuhn struck out a very impressive 19 batters during the game allowing only three hits and one run. Stats like these obviously allowed the rest of the team to play a little bit looser and they took over the game offensively to pick up a 9-1 victory.

With a win like that they wanted to carry that momentum into the La Grange tournament but unfortunately, they could not find their footing again.

Day one saw back-toback losses for the Cardinals against Sealy (5-2) and Madisonville (1-0). They bounced back with a strong showing against the hosting La Grange but fell short again 7-6, before getting blown out by Anderson- Shiro 21-1.

That last game is enough to make any athlete mad and want to prove that’s not who they are, and the Cardinals are no different. It was an ugly game that led to an ugly score, but the Cards will learn from it and charge headfirst into their district schedule.

With Tidehaven next on the schedule the Cardinals are looking to keep things rolling in district play and pick up their second district win on their home field.
