The Columbus Lady Cardinals have added State Semi-Finalist to their resume but now they can add All-District honors to that as well.
The Lady Cards had five players named to the All-District team and even had one named, Newcomer of the year.
Thea Schobel was selected as Newcomer of the year for the Lady Cards and her impact should not go unnoticed. Schobel provided a spark off the bench and in the starting lineup, that’s how valuable she was.
Put her in any spot with any type of minutes and she’s still productive. Not only that but on a team lacking a true center Schobel stepped up and went amongst the trees and held her own.
Offensively or defensively, Schobel was in the mix and kept the Lady Cards fighting spirit alive and well all season long. Schobel provided the spark needed for the Lady Cards, but there were two players that ensured they were driving in the right direction once things started to fall into place.
Karlee Mathis and Sage Thomas were both selected to the first All-District team. Mathis and Thomas led this team a lot this season, all the while they were also the most productive on the team.
Mathis was a vocal leader all season long and made sure everyone knew what they were doing, where they were going and how to do it. She established herself as the clear captain of this team and earned the respect of her teammates and coaches, being a senior this year her presence will be missed greatly.
Thomas was more of the lead by example, type of leader. With Ally Tribe going to college early the Lady Cards needed some help in the paint gathering rebounds and Thomas stepped up.
She was tough as nails all season long and always reminded teams that she was going to be fighting for the ball until the whistle. If teams dared to give her space, she made them pay as she was one of the more consistent shooters for the Lady Cards this season, another senior the Lady Cards will miss next season.
Next is the second All-District team where Anaya Gardner and Ava Heffley were selected. Gardner being on this roster speaks for itself, she completely dominated in the second half of the season.
Just look at her run through the regional portion of playoffs, she never scored under 20 points during that stretch. With Mathis graduating this coming Spring Lady Cards basketball fans can rest easy knowing Gardner is on the roster.
The Lady Cards have something in the freshman and she’s going to continue to get better heading into next season.
Heffley was an underrated defender during this season. She never did anything flashy, but she forced a lot of turnovers.
She was fundamentally sound and forced teams to play around her as opposed to through her. She added a lot of value on the defensive side of the ball and thus earned her spot on the second All-District team.
Congratulations to all Lady Cards selected to the All-District roster.
