DRT announces contest winners

Local students recently participated in art and essay contests sponsored by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and received awards for the top entries.

Local students recently participated in art and essay contests sponsored by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and received awards for the top entries.

In January, seventh grade students in Danette Cantu’s class from St. Anthony Catholic School wrote essays on the Canary Islanders and their impact on Texas history.

Additionally, fourth graders from Ms. Casey Fedako’s class at Columbus Elementary and Ms. Kelsey Bohuslav’s class at St. Anthony’s Catholic School submitted artwork for DRT’s Republic of Texas Museum in Austin. These creations depicted historical events from Colorado County prior to 1850.

Top essays were composed by Jacob Muzny in first place, Reese Sunderman in second place, and Joshua Newman in third place. The prize-winning artwork was created by Kimber Nelson in first place, Catheryn Besch in second place, and Hudson Henneke in third.

A great deal of research, effort, and creativity went into the finished compositions and posters which were judged by the members of the local DRT chapter, Dilue Rose Harris.

All students received certificates and the top three students in each category received a local prize. The students’ compositions and posters were then forwarded to the district and/or state level for further evaluation and possible awards.

The DRT is the oldest women’s patriotic organization in Texas, and is dedicated to the preservation and education of Texas history.

For more information on the DRT, please visit the website at www. drtinfo.org or the Dilue Rose Harris Chapter Facebook page. Any woman interested in becoming a full or associate member of the Dilue Rose Harris Chapter in Columbus may contact Marilyn Wade at [email protected].

Full members can prove lineal descent from a Republic of Texas patriot or citizen. Associate membership is offered to those women who would not otherwise be eligible for full membership but have a deep interest in the history of Texas and the objectives of DRT.
