Wildcats can’t close out Bloomington in penultimate game

WEIMAR – The Wildcats’ varsity basketball team did everything they could to give their much-improved season another victory as they faced off against the Bloomington Bobcats on Friday, Feb. 10. After an intense first half and a big run for the Wildcats in the second half, it seemed they were getting closer to accomplishing that goal. WEIMAR — The Wildcats’ varsity basketball team did everything they could to give their much-improved season another victory as they faced off against the Bloomington Bobcats on Friday, Feb. 10. After an intense first half and a big run for the Wildcats in the second half, it seemed they were getting closer to accomplishing that goal. However, the Bobcats responded with a run of their own in the fourth quarter as they eventually sent the Wildcats to the 41-36 defeat.

Weimar battled through a close game in the first half with slim margins separating the two teams. After finishing the first quarter with an 8-5 deficit, the Wildcats matched Bloomington bucket-for-bucket in the second to take the same three-point deficit into the halftime break. The teams scored 11 points each as a hotly contested first half came to an end. Weimar had their best period by far in the third when they once again reached double digits with a gamehigh 14-point effort. They also locked in defensively, allowing just six points in the period with a stifling game plan that forced several turnovers. The Wildcats won the third period 16-6 to take a lead into the fourth quarter.

However, fortunes flipped in the final frame as the Bobcats went on their own double-digit scoring run to retake the lead from the Wildcats. Bloomington scored 16 points while holding the Wildcats to just six as they erased Weimar’s progress in the third and claimed a lead that would eventually deliver the victory.

Five players for the Wildcats scored four or more points for the offense. Derek Rees led the way with 12 points, followed by Brady Henke who scored seven points. Camden Morrison had five points, while Dreylon McMillian and Marcus Castillo added four points each. Huxton Kloesel snagged a game-high seven rebounds, and Zachary Norrell stole the ball from the opposition six times in the game.

Results from the Wildcats final game against Shiner on Tuesday night, Feb. 14 were not available by the press deadline.
