The Columbus Cardinals hosted the Hop Priest tournament this past weekend and defeated the Weimar Wildcats on Saturday, Feb. 24, on their home field.
With beautiful weather the Cardinals and Wildcats wasted no time sinking their teeth into this game.
The teams took a little bit of time to settle into the game and get adjusted to the pace they wanted to play at. During this time every mistake either team made was exploited, but the thing is the mistakes were few and far between.
The Cardinals’ and Wildcats’ defensive plays were big throughout the game shutting down any opportunity the other had. Any chance either the Cardinals or Wildcats had to score the defense would rise to the occasion and close out the inning.
Both teams found themselves in situations where they left runners in scoring positions on the bases. So, scoring was low to start the game because pitching and defense for both teams came to play on Saturday morning.
Neither team wanted to provide a spark for the other team so sound defense was a must and these guys provided it. But the Cardinals had more of a chip on their shoulder because they wanted to get the crowd into the game and put on a show for the home crowd.
The fifth inning is where the Cardinals finally broke the tie to put some pressure on the Wildcats. In the bottom of the fifth the Cardinals scored three runs to make the score 5-2.
The Cardinals relied on their pitching and defense to finish the game and secured the victory.
The Cardinals now look ahead to their next game against Bellville on Monday, Feb. 26, on the road where they will look to string some wins together to start the season on the right foot.
