Colorado County officials encourage voting ‘etiquette’

1. Register in Advance. Texas law does not allow for voter registration at the polls. Voters must register to vote 30 days prior to an election. The deadline for Voter’s Registration for Texas was Feb. 5, 2024.

2. Know where to go. On Election Day, March 5, voters must go to their designated polling place as directed by the county. Look at the county website for polling place locations, or visit https://earlyvoting.texas-election.com/Elections/getElectionDetails.do

3. Be Prepared. Bring a picture ID, Required, and the Voter’s Registration Card, Recommended, and have them out and ready to hand to the Election Official. Voters can check to see if they have the required ID by visiting https://www.votetexas.gov/register-to-vote/need-id.html A “Real ID” with the star is not a requirement to vote.

4. Leave cell phones behind. Voters cannot have a cell phone within a 100-yard radius of a polling location by Texas law. The best bet is to leave it in the vehicle or at home.

5. Do not bring a weapon. Although Texas is open carry, weapons such as guns and knives are not permitted at polling places. Remove any knives from any belts or holsters before coming in.

6. Voters are not allowed to wear clothing, pins, or other propaganda that features, supports, or opposes any political party or measure on the ballot. This includes shirts, caps or insignias for/against measures. Our Elections Officials are fellow neighbors and residents and don’t like to ask someone to change.

7. No Talking. During check in, voters will be asked a series of questions, please answer in a quit tone. We encourage voters to think of a polling location as you would a library. It is very tempting to socialize and ask spouses or friends a question as opposed to an election official — please don’t. Talking should be kept at a minimum, only to an election official, and in a whisper.

8. Be Patient. Follow the distancing guidelines in the polling locations and be considerate of the individuals around you and their personal space. Our elections officials are doing everything to keep the lines moving and providing the resources to citizens to cast ballots more privately–sometimes that requires a wait.

9. Be Considerate. Written materials — such as sample ballots or a list of candidates, not a phone or tablet, — are OK to bring into voting stations to help with casting a ballot. But please don’t leave materials behind. Election workers will be right behind to clean and sanitize the voting station, but trash and other materials should be picked up by the user.

10. Respect your neighbor. We are a small community that hosts joint elections which means not everyone has the same opinions or party affiliations. Think before you speak.
