GARWOOD — The school year has reached its latter stages after students at Colorado County schools have surpassed the 100th day of classes. Each school celebrated the mark differently, but the students at Garwood Elementary were challenged to show some kindness with charitable donations.
Garwood celebrated their 100th day on Jan. 31 by hosting a “Kindness and Giving Challenge.” The students were given the goal of collecting 100 quarters to donate to the Garwood Volunteer Fire Department, 100 canned goods to the Eagle Lake Food Pantry and 100 units of pet supplies for local animal shelters.
After just around a week, the Garwood students had surpassed their goals by a wide margin.
The students donated 4,200 quarters to Garwood VFD for $1,050 in donations. The donation was presented at the VFD’s annual stew supper and auction on Feb. 3. Garwood also collected 641 canned goods to donate to the EL Food Pantry. The students completed their donations with 381 pet supply items that will be delivered to local animal shelters and rescues.
With such a successful campaign, the staff at Garwood Elementary expressed their pride in how charitable the students and parents of the school showed themselves to be during the exercise.
