Amy Mikulin has been coaching for the past 31 years and after her game on Monday, Feb. 5, she decided to close the chapter on her outstanding coaching career.
As a native of Dime Box, TX Mikulin got her coaching start.
“I started off at my hometown and coached there for six years,” Mikulin said. “It was the perfect place for me fresh out of college and quite the learning experience.”
Mikulin said she learned several valuable lessons while working in Dime Box. She even coached her younger sister. Mikulin joked saying that their relationship is still intact today.
“Luckily she still calls me family,” Mikulin said.
Shortly after her time in Dime Box ended, Mikulin moved to Laredo, where she got a chance to coach at United ISD. She stayed in Laredo for eight years where she had a very full plate as far as coaching goes.
She was coaching both the Middle and the High school teams and while that can be a lot she said it was always fun becasue she got to work with another person close to her heart.
“I coached both Washington Middle School and United High School,” Mikulin said. “I was blessed to have the opportunity of working with my older sister who was the athletic trainer at United High School.”
While she loved coaching at her first two stops and being around her sisters Mikulin eventually became homesick and wanted to move back closer to home. That’s where Columbus enters the picture.
“After being in Laredo for a while, I wanted to move back closer to home,” Mikul in said. “Columbus gave me that opportunity.”
Mikulin was given the opportunity to come an coach in Columbus in 2007 and she has been here ever since. She began her time in Columbus coaching basketball at the high school level.
After six years of coaching at the high school level Mikulin moved back to coaching middle school basketball to help the younger athletes learn their fundamentals better. Mikulin looked back on her time coaching at Columbus fondly and said she will always cherish the memories.
“I worked with many talented athletes, and I hope they have learned from me as much as I have learned from them,” Mikulin said. “Thank you, Columbus, for all my time spent here and the many memories I will always cherish.”
