The Columbus Lady Cardinals are playoff bound after defeating the Palacios Sharkettes 51-26 on Tuesday, Feb. 6, on their home court.
The Lady Cards played their best game of the season Tuesday night to clinch a playoff spot.
From the opening tip-off the Lady Cards approached the game differently and made sure that they looked different and they did. Leading the way for the Lady Cards was Karlee Mathis, just like she has been all season long.
She brought a different type of emotion to the game that quickly spread to her teammates. Mathis was always communicating with her head coach Mike Albers and her teammates.
She demanded perfection and her teammates responded by following her into battle. Mathis was at the forefront of every posession to calling out orders and plays to her teammates and making sure to get the ball to open areas.
This led to the second x factor for the Lady Cards and their huge win and that was their offense. Mathis was leading the charge and leading her group but as a captain that is her job.
But she never acted alone at any point during the game.
Her teammates wanted to win the game just as badly as her, and when they saw her emotion and her passion the Lady Cards shifted into another gear. Sage Thomas and Anaya Gardner were unstoppable from threepoint range, and it benefited the Lady Cards.
Whenever the defense shifted their focus to Mathis she always knew where either Thomas or Gardner were on the floor and made astonishing passes and they would knock down the open shot.
The Sharkettes had no answer for the Lady Cards, and after the win the Lady Cards also kept their celebration to a minimum and remained focused on the task at hand. Which is now a playoff game.
The Lady Cards do not know who they are going to be playing in the playoffs just yet, but they are ready to go whenever against whoever when the time comes.
