COLUMBUS — The teachers and staff of Columbus Independent School District now know their schedules for the next school year after the Board held a regular meeting on Jan. 22.
The calendar makers contacted teachers and staff to find elements of the schedule that were nonnegotiable and other elements that could be helpful. Some of the feedback they received was that teachers did not want to start school later than Aug. 14, and wanted to be out of school for the summer before Memorial Day. The teachers also requested a few in-service days before students arrive for classes to help prepare their classrooms and lesson plans for the first six weeks.
The results of their research led to a schedule that met several of the desires for the teachers and staff they polled.
Teachers will begin the 2024-25 school year on Tuesday, Aug. 6 before students arrive for the first day of class on Wednesday, Aug. 14. The teachers requested that the school year start on a half week to help both them and their students get back into the rhythm of classes after the summer.
There are a few other key dates that were selected and included in the CISD schedule for next year. The calendar will feature five in-service days throughout the school year for teachers to work without students in the classrooms. Those days are:
• Sept. 13
• Nov. 1
• Jan. 6, 2025
• Feb. 17, 2025
• May 23, 2025
CISD schools will also have a few early release days throughout the school year, including a potential early release day for an out-of-town football game. Oct. 11, Dec. 19 and May 22, 2025 have been selected as the definite dates for early release. Students will start their Winter Break on Dec. 20.
The final day of school for students will be on May 22, while the teachers’ final day will be on May 23.
In other news, the school board discussed the report on their educational progress and the construction on the fifth-grade wing at Columbus Elementary School and the new Career and Technology Education building. Further details on the construction and report will be covered in future editions of the Citizen.
