Weimar fails to close out close games

The last week for the Weimar varsity boys’ basketball team came with some tight competition as the Wildcats finish off the final games of their season. The Wildcats played in back-to-back close games that each had a final margin of three or less on the scoreboard. Unfortunately for Weimar despite their solid efforts, they could not claim a win in either game as they fell by one possession to each opponent. The Wildcats left the week with just a 5-point combined margin of defeat.

Vs Louise, L, 46-44

The Wildcats started their game against Louise with one of their best offensive quarters of the season. They opened with a 21-point quarter and held their opponents to just eight points as they built a big lead. They let go of the rope a bit in the second as they managed just four points of offense following their highly effective opener. They also allowed Louise to score into double figures in the period as the teams entered halftime with a 25-24 score line in favor of Weimar. The Wildcats lost a little bit of ground in the third quarter as they failed to get enough stops to support their double-digit scoring effort. Weimar went on to outscore Louise in the fourth by one point, but it was not enough to take the lead back after conceding the pole position in the third.

Leading scorer Brady Henke stuffed the stat sheet in the effort that nearly resulted in a Wildcat win. He scored 12 points to match with six rebounds and four assists. The next-highest scorer, Huxton Kloesel, also had a stat-sheet stuffing effort with nine points, four assists, five steals and a team-leading 11 rebounds. Derek Rees added eight points and six rebounds.

Vs Ganado, L, 52-49

While the Wildcats never had an offensively explosive quarter like their game earlier in the week, they had a much more evenly spread scoring effort throughout each quarter. They scored at least 11 points in every period and matched their game-high 13 points in the bookend periods as they started and finished the game strong. However, for every bucket the Wildcats picked up, Ganado would seemingly answer right back. This dynamic was fully on display in the final three quarters as the teams scored 36 points each following the first. Because of this, the opening quarter actually turned out to be the deciding period. Weimar allowed Ganado to score 16 points in the period to create a three-point lead that would stand as the game’s final margin.

Derek Rees had a fantastic offensive game for the Wildcats. He notched 20 points and had four steals as well. Dreylon Mcmillian came in with 10 points and five rebounds, matching top assister Brady Henke’s five rebounds. Henke led the team in passing with six assists and added six points as well. Marcus Castillo also added six points, and Huxton Kloesel finished with a game-high eight rebounds.
