The Weimar varsity lady hoops team entered the last few games of the season with a goal of finishing as high as possible in the district standings. With six district losses, they had already given up their claim on the district title before entering play last week. However, they got a big win against the team ahead of them in the standings during their two games played as they try to reach one of the district’s top spots and qualify for the postseason.
Vs Louise, W, 42-19
The Ladycats did not have to stress much as they claimed a blowout victory over Louise. Weimar created their advantage with high defensive pressure that carried on throughout the game. They never allowed Louise to score more than six points in any quarter. They even held Louise to a game-low two points in the second quarter as they continued to build their lead. They also got solid support from their offensive attack as they found a lot of success on that end. They scored into double digits in the first and third quarters with a game-high 13 points in the third. They just missed out scoring double digits in their other periods with nine points in the second and eight in the fourth. Both sides of the ball combined to deliver the huge victory.
Paige Pavlu led all scorers with 17 points and picked up a team-leading 13 rebounds as well. Claire Pavlu and Jaiya Cook added nine rebounds each in a tie for the second-leading rebound total. Izzy Reeves and Kim Hinze provided the perimeter defensive pressure with three steals apiece.
Vs Ganado, W, 46-33
Sitting at fourth place in the district, the Ladycats had just a few games remaining to attempt their climb into one of the top three spots. The team directly ahead of them, the Ganado Lady Indians, traveled to Weimar for a late-season matchup with postseason implications. Weimar found an advantage in this game due to their stout defense that helped them take control of the game in the second half. The first half ended in a stalemate as the teams went into the locker room with 19 points apiece. Weimar found success on both sides of the ball outside of the halftime break. They scored double digits in each of the final two quarters as well as held Ganado to just seven points in each period. Weimar quickly built a strong lead and did not allow Ganado to threaten taking the lead back.
The Ladycats may have had one of their most even offensive performances of the season as seven different players scored six or more points. The leader was Jaiya Cook who had nine points and matched Paige Pavlu with five rebounds as they finished as the top glass cleaners. Kim Hinze and Chandley Tolbert finished with seven points each with the next highest scoring totals. Hinze picked up four assists and four steals to go along with her points, and Tolbert added four rebounds. Claire Pavlu, Izzy Reeves and Paige all finished with six points each for the offense.
