Lady Cards stay undefeated in district after blowout wins

The Columbus Lady Cards’ basketball team is looking to wrap up their third-straight district title after securing a few more blowout victories in the late part of the season. The job is just about done as even if Columbus falls to Palacios Tuesday night in the final game of the season, they will still have the top district record. At this point the odds would likely be in Columbus’ favor as their offensive and defensive attacks are meshing together at the perfect time. The Lady Cards are hoping their recent success translates into the postseason as they aspire to have an improved playoff run after last year’s first-round departure.

The Columbus Lady Cards’ basketball team is looking to wrap up their third-straight district title after securing a few more blowout victories in the late part of the season. Vs Hallettsville, W, 80-48

If there was any doubt that Columbus was the highest-performing team in the district, the Lady Cards removed all doubts with their dominating win against the district’s second- place team. Hallettsville performed admirably on offense, scoring double digits in every quarter but their nine-point opening period.

The issue for the Brahmettes was in the fact that the Lady Cards had everything working offensively as Columbus picked up their second 80-point game of the season. They came out with an outstanding 22-point first quarter led by eight points apiece from Ally Tribe and Sage Thomas, and they never scored less than 19 points in any of the remaining periods. Hallettsville had their best offensive period in the fourth with 15 points, but they could not withstand another flurry from Tribe who picked up 12 points in the final frame to close things out.

Tribe finished as the team’s leading scorer with 26 total points. Bailey Gustus was the next highest scorer on the team and has been a consistent contributor to the offense in the season’s latter stages. She had 16 points followed by Thomas who finished with 15 points after her first-quarter run. Karlee Mathis added 12 points as the final double-digit scorer for Columbus.

Vs Tidehaven, W, 58-35 The Lady Cards did their best to prevent the home game against Tidehaven from becoming competitive from the opening tip. They blitzed their opponents to start with an 18-2 advantage following the first period. The Tigerrette’s scoring picked up in the following periods with nine points in the second and 12 points in each of the final two quarters. However, Columbus still outscored Tidehaven in every quarter as they slowly added to the huge lead they created in the first. This game highlighted a few huge runs from individuals as well. Treasure Upson made three 3-pointers in the first quarter during the explosive opening period, and Karlee Mathis hit four 3-pointers in the third as she provided all of the team’s scoring in that period.

Mathis scored 14 points in the third and had six total 3-pointers on the way to 20 points to lead the team. Upson finished with 12 points as the team’s next highest scorer, and Ally Tribe was just one point away from finishing as another double-digit scorer for Columbus.
