Lillian Kubesch Gohlke Hobbs of Sheridan died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023.

She was born Feb. 2, 1937 in Nada, the second daughter of Fred and Freida Kubesch. She graduated from Garwood High School and Wharton County Junior College. She went on to receive her B.A. in English and M.A. from Sam Houston State University with certification in Library Science.

She taught 33 years for the Sheridan and Rice CISD as an English and Spanish instructor and Librarian. Upon retiring from high school teaching, she stepped in and volunteered her services in the Sheridan Public Library for 10 years.

She holds membership in the Colorado County Retired Teachers of Texas, San Bernard Electric Advisory Board, Delta Zeta sorority, the Friends of the Library, and the Lions Club. Her teaching experience included holding two NDEA Fellowships at the University of Texas in both English and Spanish. In 1974, she was chosen as an Outstanding Secondary Educator of America. She served on the Sheridan Library Board and as a Red Cross swimming instructor. In 1992, she received the John H. Lovelady Lifetime for Youth Award based on her 20 years as sponsor of the Rice Future Teachers of America. Lastly, she was named in 1994 to Who’s WHO IN THE SOUTHWEST, 1995-1996 edition, and in 1999, she was named Colorado County’s “Older Texan”.

In 1964, she married William C. Gohlke. She had 2 stepchildren: David Gohlke and wife, Cindy, of Sheridan and Kristi Price of Sheridan. She leaves a sister, Jo Ann Truman of Friendswood and one brother, Fred and wife Dorothy, of Victoria, sister-in-law Donna Kubesch of Wharton, and her current husband, Roddy Hobbs of Hallettsville.

She has 4 grandsons; Brad Gohlke and wife Michele, of Katy; Jeremy Gohlke of Sheridan; Boe Price and wife Stephanie, of Lake Jackson; Shawn Price and wife Courtney, of Lake Jackson; and 8 great-grandchildren. She also leaves several nieces and nephews.

Her parents preceded her in death, along with her first husband, William C. Gohlke, and brother, Ray Kubesch.

Her travels took her to all 50 states, plus 8 European countries, the Eastern and Western Caribbean, Panama, Costa Rica and Mexico.

Her mother was her role model, teaching to give her time to help better the community in which she lived. Teaching her gave her the opportunity to touch the lives of so many young people. She thanked all the communities for their children.

She was lecturer for 10 years at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and held memberships in the Catholic Daughters and K.J.Z.T. society.

Visitation was held at Eagle Lake Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 15, 2023.

Funeral services were held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2023, with Father Michael Rother officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Nada.

Pallbearers are Brad and Jeremy Gohlke, Boe Price, Wes and Conner Kubesch and Cameron Waida.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Sheridan Memorial Library or the Sheridan Fire Department.
