Just place your pre-stamped and pre-addressed recipient card in another envelope and mail it to: Postmaster, Valentine, Texas 79854. He’ll do the rest. Valentine sends cards all over the country Leave it to Texas to have its own Valentine. It’s the busiest week of the year in this small town of Valentine in Jeff Davis County. Back near 1882, when a railroad crew of the Southern Pacific Railroad finished laying tracks from Van Horn east on Feb. 14, it is said that they decided to name the spot “Valentine, Texas.” It’s located on highway 90 and remains small with under 200 people.
In early Texas and Colorado County in the mid 1800s valentines were hand-made of paper, cotton, paints, ribbons, lace, and drawings. Our schools had colorful hand-made valentine boxes where children could place their valentines for others to share. Some still do.
St. Valent ine’s Day goes back to Roman times, with the printing of Valentine’s cards in England and the US in the mid 1800s, which continues today as a popular custom. So get your valentine and spread a little Texas love.
