The Columbus Cardinals basketball team was defeated 63-54 by the Yoakum Bulldogs on Friday night on their home court.

The Cardinals had a slow start to the game but made a strong push to end the game and came up just short.

The Cardinals scored only four points in the first quarter to the Bulldogs 20 and the Bulldogs gathered a lot of early momentum. The second quarter was completely different from the first quarter with Columbus scoring 19 points to cut into the lead.

The Bulldogs scored 15 points in the second quarter and the two teams went into the break with a score of 35-23. Starting the game being down 16 the Cardinals knew it was going to be an uphill battle so they made sure to get the ball to their playmakers.

Camdon Pitchford and Trevor Berger combined for 41 points, and they started to really let the ball fly in the second half.

The Cardinals again outscored the Bulldogs in the third quarter, 18-14, to go into the fourth quarter with a score of 49-41. The Cardinals were still trailing by eight points, but they worked their way back from being down 16 points to start the game.

The Cardinals had a newfound sense of urgency in the second half and really started to focus on executing their game plan. Cutting the lead down to single digits gave the Cardinals a lot of confidence heading into the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs were not going to surrender though just because the Cardinals started executing though and came out in the fourth just as aggressive as the Cardinals. The two teams traded scores throughout the fourth.

Each point scored was huge for both teams as the Cardinals got close to tying things up before the Bulldogs went on a run to extend their lead and put things out of reach. As the Time ticked down the Cardinals were on the losing end of things only nine points away from completing the comeback.

The Cardinals get a break for the Christmas Holiday and then will hit the ground running with another home game against Brazos on Tuesday, Dec. 27 in Columbus.
