CEF Classroom Grant awarded to Audrey Dyer

Audrey Dyer, eighth-grade science teacher at Columbus Jr. High, will celebrate the new year with some “winnings” from the Columbus Education Foundation. Her application for a CEF Classroom Grant awards her $750.00 to purchase items on her “classroom dream list.” Her listed items provide new equipment to help students better engage in the learning experience. She is always looking for creative ways to enhance learning for her 120 science students, ages 13-14 years.

The new equipment would enable students to use critical thinking more effectively with a variety of new tools. These tools will upgrade their ability to collect data, construct graphs and draw appropriate conclusions.

“I want my science students to use their writing skills to record their observations and express their ideas as they use technology to make new discoveries,” Dyer said, “I want them to be motivated by design challenges that push their limits. These tools have the ability to grab attention and pique curiosity.”

Her “Physics and Newtons Kit” is an example of tools assembled to provide opportunities for design and construction challenges as well as group collaboration. These tools help students engage in “real-world experiences” as they discuss solutions.

Shannan Gerik, CEF Board member, commented “CEF applauds the creativity of Mrs. Dyer along with many other teachers working diligently to enhance learning on many levels.” CEF Classroom grants are being awarded at CISD Elementary, Jr. High and High School campuses. CEF is a non-profit 501(c)(3) established to build a stronger community by enriching educational benefits for students.

If you would like to participate in making more Classroom Grants for special projects like this possible, contact CEF at www.ColumbusEducationFoundation.org or call 979-733-2122. CEF also welcomes donations of any size for scholarships for college and trade schools.
