The Columbus Education Foundation supported some of the local teachers at schools in Columbus after donating grant money to a pair of teachers through their “Classroom Grant” Program.
Maria Torres and Maranda Dominguez were the two most recent teachers to benefit from the grant program as they each received $500 for their classroom equipment.
Torres, a third-grade reading teacher, received the grant after submitting an application explaining that she would use the grant money to purchase a wide variety of books to help improve her students’ reading skills. Torres hopes to promote critical thinking skills and reading ability by providing her students with quality books to read during their independent time.
Dominguez hoped to purchase certain learning tools for her fifth-grade math class. Specifically, she hoped to use the money to purchase roll-away whiteboards for her students to work out math problems in small groups. Part of her goal with the use of the mobile white boards was to promote student cooperation as well as communication skills with their classmates.
CEF, a 501(c)(3) organization, was established to enhance the educational experience for CISD students through scholarships for college, trade schools and grants for their classrooms. Chairperson Shannan Gerik oversees the Classroom Grant Committee that helps decide how they allocate their resources to local teachers.
Winners at all CISD campuses will be announced in the next few weeks. For those wishing to make a donation to CEF for more future Classroom Grants, visit the website ColumbusEducationFoundation. org or call 979-733-2122 for additional information.
