The following story reflects a correction of information. It was previously reported that the current Justice of the Peace for Precinct 3 has pulled out of the election. This is incorrect as Frances Truchard, the longest running JP in Texas history, passed away, leaving the rest of his term that was filled by incumbent Don Clark. Clark will be running for reelection in March, and the position is still open for candidates to file until Monday, Dec. 11.
There are several county offices up for election in March 2024 as the county enters campaign and election season. For those looking to run for one of the several offices available in the county, the filing period ends on Dec. 11 at 6 p.m. To file for the ballot or receive more information, contact a Colorado County Party Chair or visit www.co.colorado.tx.us/page/colorado.Elections.
The Countywide positions that are available for filing are the Tax Assessor-Collector for License Plates and Titles, the County Attorney who functions as the District Attorney in Colorado County, the Sheriff and the County Party Chair.
There are a few precinct specific positions available for filing as well. Commissioner for Precinct no. 1 is available due to an expiring term. Constable nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 are up for election during the March primaries as well. Precinct no. 3 Commissioner is also up for election due to an expiring term. The Justice of the Peace for Precinct no. 3 will be up for election after the passing of JP3 Frances Truchard. Justice Donald Clark filled the position following Truchard's passing and will be seeking reelection to complete the remaining term.
The Citizen will release a voter’s guide detailing the contenders for each of the positions to be voted on in the March primaries. The Elections Office is in the process of moving into their new location, but are temporarily in the County Annex at 318 Spring St. in room 111.
