The Columbus Lady Cardinals started the season on the right foot by picking up their first win over Danbury on Monday, Nov. 20.

The Lady Cards defeated Danbury by a score of 53-24 and controlled play on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor.

Thea Schobel along with Karlee Mathis were a big part of the Lady Cards’ offense in the game accounting for 35 of their teams 53 points. Schobel finished the game with 18 points while Mathis scored 17 points.

The duo received help from Andreanna Shropshire on the offensive end as well as she scored eight points to help boost her team on the scoreboard.

From the opening tip, the Lady Cards were dialed into the game and were aggressive. The early aggressive play paid off in a big way because they were able to establish an early lead.

Not only that but the Lady Cards defense was also aggressive and took the game to Danbury. They stole the ball away from Danbury several time leading to fast breaks and points for the Lady Cards.

Heading into halftime, the Lady cards knew that Danbury was going to respond in the second half. Danbury started the second half with an early run to cut into the Lady Cards lead and catching their defense asleep at the wheel.

The Lady Cards quickly got things back on track in the third quarter and got back to their aggressive game-plan. The Lady Cards and Pirates would go score-for-score in the third and fourth quarter, but the Lady Cards early lead was more than enough to hold off the Pirates and collect their first win of the season.

The Lady Cards are 1-0 on the season and would like to build on that win with their next game coming on their home court against Rosenberg Terry on their home court.
