Can we make a better Columbus?

Recently some long-time friends from New Braunfels came over for lunch and a brief visit. When they opened our front door and entered the house, they said rather loudly “we want to move to Columbus”. I had to respond showing my appreciation of the compliment. The friends, Dr Fred and Coleen Willard, went right into an explanation. Perhaps you are familiar with New Braunfels and are aware that the traffic is horridsome of the appeal of the town (and its German culture) has been lost with its explosion of people. Our conversation about their perception of Columbus included the reality of the lack of affordable housing for residents such as teachers. I had to throw in my disdain with the weeds and grass in our downtown sidewalks and properties. On the other hand we had to mention the forethought of giving the Live Oaks trees the right of way, leaving them in the middle of the street, and the dedication of maintaining them. We did not forget our emphasis on historic structures and the good fortune of having an outstanding Community Hospital.

It is encouraging, and I hope you know about the efforts of an organization called “A BETTER COLUMBUS”. This is an organization whose mission is to strive for a vibrant community, connecting residents, visitors, and businesses to encourage growth while celebrating our heritage.

When you learn that Billy Kahn (former Chamber of Commerce Executive Director) chairs “A BETTER COLUMBUS”, you immediately sense credibility and action. The purpose of A BETTER COLUMBUS is 1) Create a consortium to fund innovative projects, 2) Bolster growth and beautification, 3) Foster collaborative partnerships to meet the needs of the community stakeholders, and 4) Promote and preserve our diverse culture and tradition. THE VISION: Creating a better Columbus.

I’m sure that you have admired the “Greetings from Columbus” mural at the corner of Spring and Milam. The artist was Tyler Kay. This delightful mural was funded by the City of Columbus and the Chamber.

Creating a better Columbus is an opportunity to ‘feel’ like you’re in the ‘know’. The ownership feeling grows as you participate in a project, work group, or donate. It can simply be helping with a clean-up effort.

The next significant project for “A BETTER COLUMBUS” is hanging flower baskets for the Square.

By the way, as an event of the Bicentennial, I am writing and directing a play: “Happy Birthday Columbus”. The cast will include adults and children, (ages 8-12). Watch for try-outs. The play will be in early May. Please call me, Nancy Stiles, at 979-7324780 for more information.
