Rice Raiders basketball off to hot start

The Rice Raiders are off to a hot start to their basketball season after winning two of their first three games.

The Rice Raiders are off to a hot start to their basketball season after winning two of their first three games.

The Raiders defeated Gonzales and Danbury before dropping a game to Sealy to begin their season with a 2-1 record.

Vs. Gonzales, W, 63-62

The Raiders wasted no time to collect their first win and stress their fans out in the process.

The one-point game came down to the wire and the Raiders had to dig deep to find a way to just edge out Gonzales. They made sure to take care of their defensive end before getting aggressive on offense.

They shut down Gonzales late in the game and were able to find offensive opportunities because of it. The Raiders got the lead late and pressured Gonzales until the final buzzer sounded.

With the first win under their belt the Raiders looked to their next matchup against Danbury looking to make their record 2- 0.

@ Danbury, W, 61-46

The Raiders kept things rolling when they faced off against Danbury and picked up another win.

After the close game against Gonzales the Raiders decided to start the game with a big lead and let their defense do what they do best. The Raiders took the game right to Danbury and were aggressive on offense which aided them in building such a large and early lead.

The Raiders’ defense kept the Danbury offense in check for most of the game until Danbury was able to find some late offensive magic. Danbury closed the gap on the scoreboard a little bit, but the Raiders remained aggressive on offense and closed out the game.

Sitting with a 2-0 record the Raiders were feeling good about their season but as the old saying goes, “You can’t win them all” and the Raiders learned that in their next game against Sealy.

Vs. Sealy, L, 54-53

Coming off of two big wins the Raiders matched up with Sealy looking to extend their winning streak.

The two teams matched up very well against each other as space was very limited in the game. That did not stop either offense from making plays and as each ball smacked the net the louder the crowd got.

This was Sealy’s first game of the season and wanted to start things off right with a win while the Raiders were trying to extend their winning streak. The fans knew what they were playing for an played their role in the game beautifully.

The gym was rocking for this game and as the game dwindled down and the score was as close as it can be Sealy was able to pull away late and seal the victory.

Coming off the loss the Raiders will get a nice little break from games before coming back on Saturday, Dec. 2, when they travel to Weimar for their next game against the Wildcats.
