The Columbus Cardinals regular season has come to a close they finished with an overall record of 10-0 and ranked the number one team in the state but it was their strong district season that helped them secure the top spot in the rankings.

The Cardinals are well known now for their high-flying offense and stout defense but their offense in district alone was one of the most dominant offenses in all of high school football.

Quarterback Adam Schobel is the heartbeat of the Cardinals’ offense along with running back Ty’Vone Whitehead. They did an exceptional job throughout their district season mixing up their plays with a healthy dose of running plays and then taking advantage with their passing game.

With this type of offensive talent, the Cardinals went through their district with ease while their playmakers racked up stats. In addition to Schobel and Whitehead the Cardinals had Jackson Hancock, Braylon Fisher and Camdon Pitchford as a trio of receivers that gashed opposing defenses.

Schobel had no issue throwing the ball to any of those guys and looking at his stats from the district season that is evident. Schobel completed 57 of his 87 pass attempts (66% completion) for 666 yards and four touchdowns.

Hancock was the biggest beneficiary of Schobel’s elite passing ability, hauling in 32 passes from Schobel for 734 yards and 2 touchdowns. Fisher was next on the list in terms of receiving yards for the Cardinals, catching seven passes for 121 yards, with Pitchford not too far behind Fisher catching eight passes for 73 yards and a touchdown.

With the passing game being prolific as it was during the district schedule the Cardinals offense was centered around their ability to run the football effectively every single game. The Cardinals faced a lot of good defenses during district but whenever they needed a big play Schobel could just turn around and hand the ball to Whitehead.

Whitehead was the perfect balance of speed and power coming out of the Cardinals’ backfield. Whitehead carried the ball 80 times for 734 yards and 18 touchdowns throughout district.

Whitehead averaged 9.2 yards a carry throughout district, and it aided the Cardinals on multiple occasions. Schobel can throw the ball with some of the best in the state but having Whitehead line up next to him is something that makes the Cardinals truly elite.

The Cardinals and their playmakers now enter the playoffs looking to continue their dominant offensive performances and have begun preparing for their firstround matchup against the Rockdale Tigers on Friday, Nov. 10, at Bastrop Memorial Stadium.
