Looking back on the Ladycats season

The Huddle

The Huddle

The Weimar Ladycats’ volleyball team this past season was one of the more fun teams to watch and I am going to explain.

Welcome back to the Huddle everyone and today, as you have already read, we are taking a look at the Weimar Ladycats and their 2023 season.

Now this to start I want to congratulate the Ladycats and their coaching staff and everyone who lent a hand to this team this year on a truly fantastic season. They were always a team they never got ahead of themselves and just played their game every single time they stepped on the court.

The Ladycats have typically been the little sibling in the district but this year they changed the narrative. This team had an undeniable will that really showed late in the season, especially in one of my favorite games of the year.

My favorite game to go back and look at with this team is their game against Brazos right before playoffs. The Ladycats were going to make the playoffs anyway, but the question was what seed they were going to be for their firstround matchup.

With their playoff ticket in their hand the Ladycats had a choice to make of if they were going to take the game off or go into the playoffs or come out of the gate ready to show people who they were. The Ladycats willed themselves to securing the second seed in district before playoffs and then went on to win the Bi-District and Area Championships just because they wanted them and did not take no for an answer.

This was the foundation upon which the Ladycats built their 2023 season by simply not taking no for an answer. While it stings to be eliminated from playoffs as they were right in the heart of it and a couple games away from adding a third championship to the trophy case the Ladycats have a lot to hang their hat on.

With all the success the Ladycats had this season on the volleyball court it is time to look at what went on behind the scenes that led to this success. The Ladycats had this special ability to just learn from their losses so quickly and turn things into a positive and that is largely thanks to their leadership.

The leadership on this team starting with the coach down to the underclassmen was outstanding from this team. They established a culture where if something is not clicking, they are not afraid to confront one another and get things back on track.

It is why they made the playoffs, because while they are immensely talented in every position, they were an actual team. They never pointed fingers or played the blame game; every single player wore every single loss on their sleeve and gave all the praise and spotlight to each other when they won as the great teams tend to do.

I am not saying they are a great team just because they were eliminated from the playoffs, I am saying it because they earned it. Through their stellar play, leadership and belief in themselves and one another the Ladycats made a statement this season and that statement was simply, “We are not coming anymore. We are here.”

Once again congratulations to the Ladycats and their staff on a fantastic season and thank you to everyone who reads the Huddle, I will see you guys’ next time.
