A grateful group of “GirlFriends” recently received a donation from the Columbus Lions Club to help fund their work with the third and fourth grade girls who attend the Boys and Girls Club of Champion Valley.

The GirlFriends are a small group of retired professional women whose mission is to provide enriching experiences which encourage young girls to become responsible, confident, and productive young women.

The program began three years ago and has provided diverse programs such as a trip to a live theatre performance in Brenham, a personal meeting with the mayor and assistant police chief, an afternoon English tea party, lessons in photography, a spelling bee and a visit to a horse farm.

The group meets on Wednesdays after school. Upcoming meetings will include cooking lessons from a wellknown chef and field trips to learn about medical professions.

The program has been so well received that a similar program has been developed at the Weimar Boys and Girls Club.
