The Huddle: The State of Rice Volleyball

The Rice Lady Raiders are an interesting team which might be weird to hear seeing that their season is over but just hear me out.

The Rice Lady Raiders are an interesting team which might be weird to hear seeing that their season is over but just hear me out.

The Lady Raiders went 2-12 during their district schedule and 11-33 overall but if you dive deeper into their season, you see that does not reflect the amount of improvement they saw throughout the season.

The old saying goes never judge a book by its cover and that could not be more true when it comes to the Lady Raiders. While their record is not glamorous, they are going to be one of the best teams in the district in the near future.

I had the opportunity to watch the Lady Raiders in person a few times this season and really their biggest problem is the minor errors that lead to points for the other team. But once they clean up those errors and find their rhythm in a match, they are hard to stop.

They went through what I like to call a foundation laying year where they find out exactly what team they want to be and build accordingly. The Lady Raiders have all the right pieces in place and laid down some very solid foundation this season but moving forward the errors are going to have to disappear.

Now, when I say they are making errors I am not saying it in a bad way at all. They are a young roster filled with sophomore’s and junior’s that are learning and every game they played they learned and got better.

Throughout the season the Lady Raiders did get better to say they did not would just be ignorant and unfair. While errors were their kryptonite throughout the season the number of errors were less and less each game but there were still enough to give the team extra momentum to win sets.

Luckly for the Lady Raiders this is perhaps the easiest issue to fix and there is no doubt that they will have a really great coach who understands the game but past that he understands his players. David Leist knows how to get the best out of his players and keep them competing no matter what the score is and that was shown throughout the season.

In addition to a great coach steering the ship almost 80% of the roster will be back next season if not more and they are going to come back with a new attitude.

It is an exciting time to be a fan of Lady Raider volleyball and if you don’t believe me just watch because they are coming.
