The Columbus Lady Cardinals extended their winning streak to 17 games after defeating Palacios and Yoakum last week.

The Lady Cardinals are the third ranked volleyball team in the state, and this dominate run of 17 wins in a row is proof as to why.

The Lady Cardinals started their week off on the right foot defeating the Palacios Sharks in three straight sets on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

The Lady Cards again received big performances from Ally Tribe and Sage Thomas as they recorded 16 kills, and 26 setter assists respectively. This opened the floor for Ember Mandola, Gracie Schobel and Claire Klausmeyer to take advantage of soft defensive zones.

Mandola contributed six kills to the Lady Cards winning effort while Schobel and Klausmeyer contributed five kills each as they cruised to another victory. Defensively the Lady Cards continued to frustrate offenses as they have only lost one set throughout their district schedule.

Tuesday was more of the same as the Sharks struggled to get anything going offensively as the Lady Cards kept them to under 15 points for all three sets.

With a stout defense the Lady Cards secured the win and then shifted focus to the one team that has a set win over them in the district season when they took on Yoakum on their home court on Friday, Oct. 20, in a battle for first place.

The Lady Cards showed why it is so important to have depth on your team especially at this point in the season.

During their first matchup this season the sets were tightly contested and the Lady Cards received scoring contributions from a select few. The second meeting on Friday night was a completely different story.

The Lady Cards came into Friday’s game ready to send a message and the message was clear from the opening serve. The Lady Cards attacked the Yoakum defense scoring in multiple different ways from multiple different players.

Tribe again led the way with 16 kills Friday night, but it was the contributions from Taylor Morrow, Mandola and Schobel that widened the gap between the Lady Cards and Yoakum that made the difference. Thomas contributed another 40 assists Friday night capping off their dominant win.

Scoring contributions from multiple different players allowed the Lady Cards to play a little bit looser and settle into the game faster. This allowed them to establish early leads and shut down the Yoakum offense just enough to win the match in three straight sets.

The Lady Cards now look ahead to Tuesday, Oct. 24, to their last regular season game against Industrial before gearing up for a playoff run.
