The Columbus Cardinals had three runners compete in the Regional Meet looking to secure a spot in the State Meet and two of the three achieved this goal.

Chloe Ross and Kaylea Foster continued their dominant season with a trip to Round Rock now added to their to do list.

Ross and Foster and been in the mix as some of the best runners in the state all season long and now they have a chance to hold the championship high above their head. Throughout the season Ross and Fosters names were always near the top of the results at every meet they ran in.

Monday was no different for the junior and sophomore when they settled into the starting line of a race consisting of 184 runners. They wasted no time establishing themselves as one of the top runners by getting a great start to the race and just kept the pace.

The teammates stayed close together throughout the race, beginning a little competition amongst themselves. Ross and Foster were neck and neck as they pushed through the two-mile race with ease and when they crossed the finish line, they found themselves on the card for the State Meet.

Ross crossed the finish line first for the Cardinals with a time of 13 minutes and 17 seconds and three seconds later Foster made her way across the finish line with a time of 13 minutes and 20 seconds. Ross secured 15th place with her time and Foster secured 16th place ending the race how they started, right next to each other.

Will Fitzgerald was the third Cardinal to run at the Regional Meet and unfortunately will not being joining Ross and Foster at the State Meet. Despite not qualifying Fitzgerald was still one of the stronger runners in the boys’ 5K.

Fitzgerald finished the 5K race in 19 minutes and 36 seconds which earned 80th place for Fitzgerlad. Considering there were 160 runners in the race Fitzgerald was proud of his time but even more proud of his teammates.

Fitzgerald along with the rest of Columbus High School are excited to support and cheer on Ross and Foster as they will try to bring home a state title on Friday, Nov. 3, when they travel to Round Rock, TX for the State Meet.
