The Wildcats defeated the Schulenburg Shorthorns 30-23 Friday night in a tight back and forth contest.

The Game started with Schulenburg going on a lengthy drive and taking a lot of time off the clock. They worked all the way down the field and the Wildcats’ defense was able to keep them out of the endzone and held them to just a field goal.

The Wildcats’ offense rallied around the defense and marched down the field on Schulenburg scoring the first touchdown of the game. They wasted no time building their lead early going for and succeeding on the two-point conversion to make the score 8-3 with under a minute left in the first quarter.

The second quarter started with both defenses getting a stop, but it was Schulenburg who found the endzone first in the second quarter. They scored a rushing touchdown with six minutes left in the quarter, but a missed PAT had them ahead of the Wildcats by only one point with a score of 9-8.

With four minutes left in the half, the Wildcats put together another drive that ended with a rushing touchdown. Like Schulenburg, the Wildcats also missed the PAT and carried a 14-9 lead into halftime.

The Wildcats’ rushing attack was led by Zach Norrell who racked up 112 yards and two touchdown along with Huxton Kloesel who had 62 yards and a touchdown.

The third quarter was all defense as neither team scored setting up an offensive explosion in the fourth quarter of this district matchup.

The Wildcats’ extended their lead to 20-9 to start off the fourth quarter after another rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion. But Schulenburg came roaring back and put pressure on the Wildcats.

Schulenburg scored two late rushing touchdowns in the span of a minute to make the score 23-20 with less than a minute left in the game. Schulenburg’s defense felt confident taking the field against the Wildcats with the home crowd having their back, looking to close out the game.

The Wildcats knew it was going to be an uphi ll battle and did not want to settle for a tie. The Wildcats moved the ball effectively down the field before they dialed up a play-action pass that found an open Dalton Turlington for a touchdown.

After another successful two-point conversion the Wildcats were up 3023 and were able to enjoy the bus ride home.

The Wildcats now look ahead to their next matchup against Flatonia which a ticket to the postseason on the line on Friday, Oct. 27, on their home field.
