The Columbus Cardinals cross country team traveled to Yoakum Monday, Oct. 9, to compete in their District Meet looking to qualify for the Regional Meet.
Three Cardinals accomplished the goal of qualifying for regionals with Chloe Ross, Kaylea Foster and Will Fitzgerald all punching their ticket to the meet in Corpus Christi, TX.
Ross and Foster led things off for the Cardinals in the girls’ race coming in 3rd and 4th place in the race respectively. Ross finished the race in 12 minutes and 47 seconds, Foster finished nine seconds later with a time of 12 minutes and 56 seconds.
In the boys’ race Fitzgerald finished with a time of 18 minutes and 37 seconds earning him 7th place in the race and a spot in the Regional Meet.
Four more Cardinals made their mark at the district meet but unfortunately did not qualify for the Regional Meet. Even though they will not be joining their teammates at the Regional Meet they all turned in competitive times and had a fantastic season.
Joining Ross and Foster in the girls’ race were a trio of teammates that also crossed the finish line around the same time. Scarlett McClelland, Samantha Gonzales and Karina Rubio crossed the finish line in 31st, 32nd, and 42nd place in the race respectively.
McClelland crossed the finish line first with a time of 14 minutes and 44 seconds then three seconds later Gonzales crossed the finish line with a time of 14 minutes and 47 seconds. Rubio capped off the Cardinals’ participation in the race crossing the finish line with a time of 18 minutes and 11 seconds.
Fitzgerald was joined by teammate Keegan Escamilla in the boys’ race and despite finishing in 25th place he was only two minutes behind Fitzgerald. Escamilla posted a time of 20 minutes and 26 seconds at the district meet.
Ross, Foster and Fitzgerald now look ahead to the Regional Meet in Corpus Christi, TX on Monday, Oct. 23, where they will look to keep their season alive and punch their ticket to the State Meet in Round Rock, TX.
