The Columbus Lady Cardinals extended their win streak to 14 after defeating the Edna Cowboys in three straight sets on Tuesday, Oct. 10, in Edna.
The number 2 ranked team in the state, Lady Cardinals, were caught sleeping at the wheel in the first set with the Cowboys making a late push to keep things close but they settled into the game and close out the first set and the match.
Seniors Ally Tribe and Sage Thomas were again at the heart of the Lady Cardinals offense and defense on Tuesday night racking up 18 digs each on defense along with Caylie Neisner who racked up 12 digs and then they strung together some fantastic offensive plays. Thomas posted a staggering 37 assists from her setter position on Tuesday night, 15 of which were sent in Tribe’s direction.
Tribe racked up 15 kills along with Ember Mandola who added 10 kills and Taylor Morrow who added 8 showing off just how deep and talented the Lady Cardinals are. The Lady Cardinals were in a knock down drag out fight in the first set on Tuesday night getting a wakeup call from the Cowboys. They pushed the Lady Cardinals and their defense to the brink before they surged late to take the set by a score of 25-20.
The Lady Cardinals knew they could be better and really focused up between the first and second set to avoid another set like the first and have things unravel in front their eyes. They again looked to their leaders to bring them back to reality and keep things calm on the bench and on the court.
The Lady Cardinals showed why they are the 2nd ranked volleyball team in the state by responding in a big way in the second set. The Lady Cardinals turned things around completely in the second set and returned to form.
Defensively the Lady Cardinals shut down the Cowboys offense and kept their offensive momentum to a minimum. This allowed the offense to settle back down and open the floor up a little bit more as their relentless offensive attack took over the set.
The Lady Cardinals cruised to a 25-16 win in the second set teeing them up for complete dominance in the third set.
The third set was completely controlled by the Lady Cardinals largely aided by a quick lead that they never let go of. Defensively the Lady Cardinals continued to buzz around the court and keep the ball in play and allow the offense to just to its thing.
With a final score of 25-9 in the third set, the Lady Cardinals celebrated another district win and their 14th in a row.
With three games left on the schedule they look to keep things rolling against Tidehaven on Friday, Oct. 13, in Columbus.
