The 2nd ranked Columbus Cardinals traveled to Hitchcock to take on the 4th ranked team in the state of Texas, the Hitchcock Bulldogs, and dominated the game between the top five teams.

The Cardinals enjoyed the bus ride home after a 52-24 win on the road showing why they are one of the best teams in the state in Class 3-A.

The Cardinals leaned heavily on Ty’Vone Whitehead throughout the game, and he answered the call by his team in a big way. Whitehead carried the ball 23 times for a grand total of 305 yards and five touchdowns.

Whitehead also had the longest run of the game, carrying the ball 94 yards for a touchdown, giving his team a ton of momentum. This opened the gate up for quarterback Adam Schobel to complete 16 of his 25 pass attempts for 148 yards and one touchdown that was caught by Camdon Pitchford, then the game was on autopilot offensively.

Jackson Hancock was the leading receiver for the Cardinals again on offense catching eight balls for 69 yards during Friday’s game being a reliable receiver for Schobel all night.

On defense the Cardinals were tested early on with Hitchcock scoring two touchdowns and twopoint conversions to have a 16-14 lead in the second quarter. From that point on the Cardinals retook the lead before halftime before Hitchcock scored yet again to make the score 24-21 late in the second quarter.

The Cardinals put together a fantastic drive to end the half that was capped off with a field goal to tie the game up 2424 at halftime.

The game between the two top-five teams was living up to the hype with plenty of points in the first half the Cardinals kept the theme going in the second half on offense while the defense pitched a shutout in the second half.

The Cardinals’ defense forced one fumble but did ot recover it, and then Pitchford added to his big night by adding an interception to go along with his touchdown. Hudson Hauerland tacked on another interception for the Cardinals’ defense.

Whitehead again led the way for the Cardinals’ offense in the second half continuing to run hard and put points on the board. The defense continued their strong play and frustrated Hitchcock’s offense until the final buzzer where the Cardinals were standing tall.

After defeating the 4th ranked team in Class 3-A the Cardinals have tons of swagger as they shift focus to their game against Yoakum on Friday, Oct. 20, where they look to continue their fantastic season.
