EAGLE LAKE – Mayor Tim Kelley and the City Council officially signed a proclamation declaring Oct. 5 as a day of celebration for the city’s classroom teachers.

The city joins the #TeachersCan movement as the collection of businesses and organizations have committed to honoring the sacrifice teachers make to invest in the future of students in Texas.

According to the proclamation, over 150 Texas organizations have declared their resolve in “elevating the teaching profession” as they look to highlight teachers in the state and express their support.

The #TeacherCan movement has gained a lot of traction in recent years as cities have adopted their mission and added their support to the cause. More than 125 proclamations were passed by cities around Texas in 2022.

The movement’s symbol is a light blue ribbon, and residents are being encouraged to display the ribbon on the outside of their homes and business throughout the week. According to the movement’s website at www.teacherscan. org, blue has a deeper meaning as a “light blue stole represents a degree in education.”

Iconic buildings and areas have also illuminated their locations with blue lights to mark their support for teachers in Texas.

The #TeachersCan movement has also had some significant financial support as the Texas residents and business helped the organization raise $3.1 million through donations for teachers and classrooms since its inception in 2021.
