The Weimar Ladycats’ basketball team continued their up-anddown season with another split of two games last week against district opponents. They scored the same number of points in each game but had varying levels of success in preventing their opponents from scoring as they started their week with a loss against Flatonia and followed with a Friday win against Schulenburg. There was some extra history made on Friday night as well as this season’s leading scorer, Paige Pavlu, scored her 1000th career point as a member of the Weimar Ladycats.
Vs Flatonia, L, 47-40
The Ladycats started their competitive week with some difficulties in their offensive game. They were outscored in each of the first three quarters against Flatonia, and they failed to score at least ten points in two of those periods. After coming out of halftime with a 25-19 deficit, Weimar could not draw any closer with another difficult offensive period in the third. Their fortunes flipped in the fourth as their offense returned with a 14-point effort as they made a final push to get back into the game. However, their defense could not support their offensive efforts in the fourth as they allowed Flatonia to get their fourth-straight, double-digit quarter.
Paige Pavlu played a large role in keeping the Ladycats within an arm’s length of the lead. Pavlu scored 16 points, picked up 12 rebounds for a double-double and had a team-leading six steals as well. Pavlu’s sister, Claire, and their teammate Kim Hinze scored seven points and took two steals each for the next highest totals in those categories. Izzy Reeves matched that duo with two steals of her own to go along with seven rebounds and three assists.
Vs Schulenburg, W, 40-37
Weimar followed up with a much more even offensive game to end the week against Schulenburg. Despite finishing with the same final score as their earlier game, they scored double digits in every quarter but the second and did not repeat some of the poor quarters that hindered Weimar on Tuesday. This game was by no means a simple victory however, and the Ladycats battled through a tight affair where they never finished a quarter with more than a four-point lead.
Paige Pavlu and Kim Hinze did much of the heavy lifting on offense as the duo combined for 24 points on their own. Pavlu had another double-double with 12 boards to add to her 14 points, and Hinze led the team with four assists along with her 10-point effort. Claire Pavlu had the second-highest total of rebounds with five boards as well as five points on offense.
