Lady Raiders’ defensive struggles back on court

The Rice Lady Raiders’ varsity basketball team has been searching for ways to improve all season. While their improvements have not been consistent enough to translate into wins recently, they do show glimpses of effective play through stretches. Last week, they showed some of their inconsistency as they were undermined by a defense that allowed at least 59 points in both games. They also struggled offensively with just one double-digit scoring quarter in the week as they took back-to-back district defeats.

Vs Hallettsville, L, 62-33 Rice got their roughest defensive outing of the week in their Tuesday night game against one of the top teams in the district. Hallettsville started the game hot with an explosive 27-point quarter that created a lead that the Lady Raiders would not be able to cut into. Rice responded a bit in the second quarter with 11 points and a game-high scoring period, but they nearly allowed yet another 20-point quarter as they went into halftime with a big deficit on the scoreboard. The second half was much of the same despite the Lady Raider defense holding Hallettsville down to 11 points in each of the final two periods.

Tatianna Mills led the way offensively with 16 points. Tricelle Fields was not far behind with 13 points of her own.

Vs Tidehaven, L, 59-23 The second game of the week was arguably an even more difficult outing for the Lady Raiders. Their offense deserted them once again as they failed to score over seven points in any quarter. They dealt with immense pressure from Tidehaven’s attack as well, especially to begin the game. Tidehaven opened with a 23-point quarter in the first and maintained their lead with double-digit scoring quarters in each of the remaining periods.

Tatianna Mills once again led the Lady Raiders in scoring with 12 points. Beautiful Johnson, Alejandra Palacios, Lacie Bogan, and Tricelle Fields combined for Rice’s other scoring contributions.
