The Harris Weekly Football Rankings have been released for week six and all three local teams are in the top 35 of their classes.

Columbus, Rice and Weimar all have secured a spot in the weekly rankings, and they will look to continue to climb the rankings as the season rolls along.

Columbus

The Cardinals come in as the highest ranked of the three teams, finding themselves ranked 3rd in class 3A-D1. The 5-0 Cardinals have found their identity early in the season and have operated accordingly.

The Cardinals’ explosive offense and stout defense as well as good special teams play have been the obvious driving force behind their season. Averaging 51.2 points a game on offense while allowing only 12.2 points on defense, the Cardinals sit comfortably in the driver’s seat before entering district play on Friday, Sept. 29.

With the also undefeated Madisonville Mustangs coming to town the Cardinals are looking to start their district schedule off on the right foot while also trying to reach their team goals that they set at the beginning of the season.

Rice

Next up is the Rice Raiders who have one of the younger squads in the area, but they still secured the 29th spot in the 3A-D2 rankings.

After playing some tough teams, the Raiders sit at 3-2 for their overall record with a 0-1 record in district. The Raiders offense is averaging 27.4 points a game while the defense is allowing 27 points a game.

The Raiders only have a handful of seniors on their roster and still end up in the top 30 with an offense that can score almost four touchdowns a game. They have taken some large losses so far this season but are still in contention for a playoff spot.

With plenty of district games left on the schedule for the season, they are going to continue to work and get better so they can punch their ticket to the postseason.

Weimar

Last but certainly not least is the Weimar Wildcats who claim 32nd place in class 2A-D1 in the week six rankings.

The Wildcats are sporting a 4-1 record overall with an 0-1 record in district. The Wildcats are averaging 45.6 points on offense while their defense is averaging 16.6 points against so far this season.

They may not have started their district schedule off on the right foot but with the Thrall Tigers coming to town on Friday, Sept. 29, the Wildcats will look to get back on track and climb the district standings to be in the playoff hunt as well as climb the rankings.
