Lady Raiders still have growing pains

The Rice Lady Raiders dropped both district matches last week dropping their district record to 1-6 for the season.

The Rice Lady Raiders dropped both district matches last week dropping their district record to 1-6 for the season.

The Lady Raiders would be swept in back-to-back matches by Hallettsville and Edna but despite losing in the end the Lady Raiders would show how gritty they are competing to the end of every match.

@ Hallettsville, L, 3-0 (17 25, 18-25, 15-25) Starting their week off on the road the Lady Raiders went to Hallettsville High School to take on the Brahmas on Tuesday, Sept. 26. The Lady Raiders had lost the two games prior and were looking to get back on track against the Brahmas.

The Lady Raiders would put the Brahmas on their heels early in the match early jumping out to a quick 5-1 lead forcing the Brahmas to reset with a timeout. The Timeout would be fruitful for the Brahmas as they would end up meeting the Lady Raiders at nine points each shortly after.

Despite the surge the Lady Raiders would stay in the game and not back down from the Brahmas as they two teams would trade scores for majority of the set. Unfortunately for the Lady Raiders, the Brahmas would have a late surge on offense to win the first set.

After winning the first set the following two sets would follow the first with the two teams going to battle with one another before the Brahmas closed out the set and the eventually the match.

After the match against the Brahmas the Lady Raiders would head back home to welcome in the Edna Cowboys on Friday, Sept. 29, for the second match of their back-toback district games.

Vs. Edna, L, 3-0 (18-25, 20-25, 20-25)

The Lady Raiders were able to enjoy home court on Friday when the Edna Cowboys came to visit for a volleyball match that came down to the wire.

Even though the match ended with the Lady Raiders being swept but they continued to push teams to their limits despite losing. The Lady Raiders would lead the game in blocks averaging four and a half blocks a set while the Cowboys averaged zero.

This would lead to the Lady Raiders finding some momentum in the second and third sets. The Lady Raiders were aggressive and fearless in the second and third sets and while the Cowboys came away with the win the young and scrappy Lady Raiders team still sent a message.

With plenty of time to get back in the win column before the season ends, their next chance to snap their four-game losing streak coming on Tuesday, Oct. 3, when they welcome in the Columbus Cardinals.
