The Columbus Cardinals cross-country team traveled to Giddings, TX to participate in the Camp Tejas meet on Friday, Sept. 29.
The girls’ and boys’ varsity teams competed at the meet on Friday and both teams performed very well before heading into the district meet.
Starting off with the girls’ team, they competed in a race consisting of 81 runners and had every runner finish in the top 60 of the race. Crossing the finish line first was Chloe Ross who came in 2nd place in the race.
Ross would finish the race in 12 minutes and 54 seconds, and only 25 seconds later, another Cardinal would cross the finish line. Kaylea Foster would complete the race in 13 minutes and 19 seconds to secure 4th place in a very tight race.
The next Cardinals to cross the finish line on Friday were Scarlett Mc-Clellan and Samantha Gonzales coming 21st and 51st place respectively. McClellan would post a time of 14 minutes and three seconds and Gonzales posted a time of 15 minutes and 43 seconds.
Next up was the boys’ race, and in a race consisting of 72 runners, Keegan Escamilla and Elijah Owens would settle in the starting blocks ready to leave their mark on the race.
Escamilla would find himself crossing the finishing line in 50th place with a time of 21 minutes and 16 seconds. He would finish 46 seconds before Ownes would secure 54th place for the Cardinals with a time of 22 minutes and two seconds.
Both the girls’ and boys’ races were tightly contested, but both teams had strong showings from their runners on Friday. This comes before they have to travel to Yoakum on Monday, Oct. 9, for the district meet. With the district meet now in their sights, the Cardinals are ready to build off this strong performance in Giddings, looking to lock up a district championship.
