The Columbus Lady Cardinals extended their winning streak to 11 wins last week after winning both of their district matchups.
The Lady Cardinals defeated Yoakum on Tuesday and followed it up with a sweep over Industrial on Friday. The two wins improve the Lady Cardinals record to 7-0 in district placing them comfortably in first place.
@ Yoakum, W, 3-1 (25-22, 18-25, 25-20, 25-19) Starting their district doubleheader last week for the Lady Cardinals was a trip to Yoakum. The Lady Cardinals and Yoakum both entered the match undefeated in district play and with one team leaving with their first loss of the district season both teams started the match off strong.
The teams would go back and forth in the first set with the Lady Cardinals finding a rhythm late to finish off the first set to start the match on the right foot. The Lady Cardinals led 1-0 and looked to gain complete control of the match’s momentum by going up 2-0 but Yoakum was prepared to defend their home court.
Yoakum would control most of the second set with a bend, don’t break defense, leading to an offense that took advantage of the soft and open areas of the court to put points on the board. This would lead to an 1825 loss for the Lady Cardinals, but after making it through the storm, the Lady Cardinals would deliver a counter punch.
The Lady Cardinals would keep Yoakum to 20 points or less for the rest of the match securing a win in the very pivotal third set 25-20. They carried that momentum into the fourth set, closing out the match with a 25-19 victory.
The Lady Cardinals would leave Yoakum sitting at 6-0 in district but shifted focus to their next matchup on Friday, Sept. 29, against Industrial where they continued to roll.
@ Industrial, W, 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-12)
Continuing their dominant district run, the Lady Cardinals made their way to Industrial for their seventh District game of the season. Coming off a stellar performance in Yoakum, the Lady Cardinals came into Industrial ready to make a statement.
The Lady Cardinals started the match doing what they have done all season long by jumping out to an early lead while limiting points against. The Lady Cardinals’ defense would do their job keeping industrial to under 20 points for three straight sets while the offense settled into the game early and closed out the match as quick as they could.
The Lady Cardinals picked up their seventh district win in just as many games before going back on the road on Tuesday, Oct. 3, to take on the Rice Consolidated Lady Raiders for their second matchup of this district season.
