Sheriff pulls from election, endorses candidate

The longtime sheriff of Colorado County will be serving the final months of his 42-year tenure as an officer before the primary and county elections approach in 2024.

The longtime sheriff of Colorado County will be serving the final months of his 42-year tenure as an officer before the primary and county elections approach in 2024.

In a release sent to the press on Sept. 28, Sheriff R.H. “Curly” Weid announced that he will not be running for re-election, putting an end to a decades-long history of being the leader in the Sheriff’s Office.

“I appreciate the Sheriff’s Office staff for all of their hard work and dedication,” Sheriff Weid said in the release, “Without them, my job would be impossible.” Since becoming Colorado County Sheriff in 1996, Sheriff Weid has run virtually unopposed in each election cycle. After over 40 years of serving the community, Weid is taking a step back to support a new generation of officers that he hopes will lead the future of Colorado County.

Weid gave his endorsement for a particular candidate in the sheriff’s election during his announcement as he advocated for a current officer working for the Sheriff’s Office.

“I will be supporting Colorado County Sheriff’s Sgt. Justin Lindemann, who announced he is running for Colorado County Sheriff in the 2025 election,” Weid said, “I feel that Justin has the knowledge of the inner workings of the Sheriff’s Office and is capable of leading the Office into the future.”

Weid will continue to hold his position until the results of the county elections in March of 2024.
