The Weimar Wildcats cross country team traveled to participate in the Needville invitational on Thursday, Sept 21, in Needville.

The Wildcats went up against four 6A schools and five 4A schools and ended up finishing 5th as a team out of 12 schools that participated in the meet.

The Ladycats were a big part of the team’s success having eight runners finish in the top 50 of a race consisting of 88 racers. Leading the way was Faith Cantwell who finished the two-mile race in 14 minutes and 33 seconds to secure 26th place for her team.

Shortly behind her were teammates Addie Zinnante and Emily Guzman, who finished in 31st and 33rd place, respectively. The pair ran so well that they helped boost their team’s points in the overall standings and one of them even set a personal record for themselves.

Zinnante would end up recording a new personal record for herself finishing the two-mile race in 14 minutes and 44 seconds.

Following Zinnante and Guzman were Alazay Moreno, Brooke Ohnheiser and Katharina Chaloupka. These three would finish almost back-to-back-to back as they finished in 41st, 43rd and 45th place respectively.

Another Ladycat trio would cross the finish line after Moreno, Ohnheiser and Chaloupka. Karen Martinez, Tate Griffin and Maya Fain would finish out the race for the Wildcats in 49th, 50th and 51st place respectively.

These spots and finishing so close together the Wildcats would be able to secure fifth place as a team to cap off their stellar performance at the Needville Invitational.

The boys also had a strong showing in Needville with Troy Cantwell finishing in 48th place out of 103 runners with a time of 20 minutes and 38 seconds in the three-mile varsity boys’ race. In the junior varsity boys race the Wildcats would have another runner record, another personal record and the meet.

Ty Chmelik would finish in 21st place with a time of 23 minutes and 38 seconds to log a new personal record for himself and had a very strong showing as the only wildcat in the race.

The Wildcats season will continue as they travel to Shiner for their next meet on Saturday, Sept. 30, as they look to build off the strong showing they had in Needville.
