The Weimar Wildcats lost their first district matchup against the Holland Hornets by a score of 43-22 Friday, Sept. 22, on the road in Holland.

The Wildcats had two rushers run over 100 yards on Friday night, but the Hornets’ potent offense was efficient and effective throughout the game as the two teams went back and forth all game.

Wyatt Lacina and Dreylon McMillian ran for 100 and 118 yards respectively on Friday night with teammates Zach Norrell and Huxton Kloesel rushing for 90 and 81 yards respectively. Norrell and Kloesel would find the end zone on the ground for the Wildcats along with Jerron Fisher to give the Wildcats three rushing touchdowns on Friday night.

The Wildcats’ rushing attack was the focal point of their offense as they accounted for 433 of their 453 total yards of offense. The Wildcats started the game off by opening the scoring by scoring one of their three rushing touchdowns.

They decided to go for two at the start of the game to give themselves a big lead early on in the game. The two-point try would be successful, and the Wildcats would be sitting with an 8-0 lead with nine minutes left in the first quarter.

The Hornets would deliver a counter punch in the form of back-to-back touchdowns to make the score 14-8 just before the first quarter ended. The Hornets continued to put points on the board to start the second quarter adding another touchdown to their lead with six minutes to go in the second quarter.

The Wildcats cut the Hornets lead to only one score after finding the endzone on the ground again to make the score 21-14 with a minute to go before halftime. With only a little bit of time left on the clock before halftime, the Wildcats would kick the ball back to the Hornets, which would be returned for a touchdown, and following a successful two-point attempt the Hornets were leading 2914 at halftime.

The second half would start with the Hornets picking up where they left off in the first half, scoring on their first possession. Sitting with a 36-14 lead, the Hornets defense would be tested by the Wildcats to find the endzone again on the ground for their third rushing touchdown.

With the score at 36-22 in favor of the Hornets the Wildcats’ defense would play lights out to end the third quarter to give their offense a chance to come back. The Hornets’ defense was equal to the task and shut down the Wildcats’ offense, leaving the door open for their offense to seal the game away with another score in the fourth quarter to end the game 43-22.

The Wildcats’ still have their eyes set on the playoffs despite losing their first district game because they have plenty of opportunity to get back on track with their next opportunity coming on Friday, Sept. 29, when they welcome the Thrall Tigers on their home field for their second district matchup.
