The Weimar Ladycats’ varsity basketball team hosted a winter break tournament in the middle of the week. Weimar had a few strong games during the tournament and picked up some big victories. They also had some tougher games where they found a much lower level of success on both ends. The Ladycats finished the Weimar tournament 2-2 after averaging 40 points per game.
Vs Edna, L, 43-50
Weimar started off their own tournament with a difficult outing against Edna that resulted in a loss by a close margin. The Ladycats failed to reach the 45-point mark after scoring over 60 points in their last game in a win over Bloomington. Ultimately, it was their inability to keep up with Edna’s scoring that led to the seven-point defeat.
Paige Pavlu had a big-time game for the Ladycats with an 18-point, 16-rebound performance to add another double-double to her season line. Isabel Reeves contributed in a big way as well, just missing out on a double-double herself with nine points and 10 rebounds. Jaiya Cook just missed out on a double-digit rebounding game for Weimar with nine boards.
Vs Bellville, W, 42-38
The Ladycats bounced back in a big way against Bellville in their second game of the first day. They improved their defensive production and held an opponent under 40 points for the 11th time this season. They also found just enough buckets to hold off a late push by Bellville to secure the tight, four-point victory.
Paige Pavlu and her sister Claire Pavlu teamed up to lead the Ladycats to a big win. Paige had another big stat line with 16 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals. Claire added 11 points as the team’s second-leading scorer.
Vs Giddings, W, 41-28
Weimar tightened the screws defensively even more against Giddings as they went on to secure a big blowout victory. It was just the sixth time this season that Weimar has held an opponent to less than 30 points in a game. Offensively, they stayed consistent as they got contributions from a wider variety of players. Nine Ladycats scored in the win against Giddings as they were able to have their way on both ends of the court.
Paige Pavlu led the way once again with 11 points and eight rebounds. Jaiya Cook and Chandley Tolbert matched each other for the team’s second-highest total with six points each. They also combined for 13 total rebounds.
Vs Industrial, L, 35-45
After their biggest win of the tournament, the Ladycats suffered their biggest loss of the tournament to close things out. Industrial played quality defense throughout the game and made things difficult for Weimar on offense.
Paige Pavlu picked up another double-double to end the home tournament with a 15-point, 11-rebound performance. Claire Pavlu and Isabel Reeves were the next leadings scorers for the Ladycats; they combined for 11 points and seven rebounds to help Weimar try to keep the game close.
