Area heat warnings remain in effect

COLUMBUS – Although the next chance for showers isn’t until Saturday, Colorado County officials this week are urging residents to stay cool and keep out of the heat.

COLUMBUS — Although the next chance for showers isn’t until Saturday, Colorado County officials this week are urging residents to stay cool and keep out of the heat.

An excessive heat warning from the National Weather Service based in Galveston noted there could be heat-index values up to 110 degrees this week, creating “dangerously hot conditions with high temperatures between 104 to 107.”

The warning remains in effect for Colorado, Austin and Waller counties, according to a release from Charles L. Rogers, the Colorado County emergency management coordinator.

According to the release, “Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those participating in outdoor activities.”

The NWS advised residents to “drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles.”

Extra precautions should be taken when working or spending time outdoors, officials said.

If possible, schedule strenuous activities in the early morning or the evening, know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, and wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing.

“To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments,” the release said. “Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.”

Call 911 if a person suffers heat stroke, officials added.
