EL CAMPO – The Columbus cross- country team continues to pick up the pace as they progress through their early- season competitions. The girls’ team has already begun to stand out as they consistently put up top performances in their appearances. Their most recent meet was another example of that as every Lady Card that competed placed in the top 20 with two runners finishing in the top five.

The highest finish of the day was provided by Kaylea Foster who completed the race with a bronze-medal finish. She finished the race in 13 minutes and five seconds as the third-quickest time at the meet. Foster’s cousin and last year’s state-qualifying runner, Chloe Ross, finished in fifth place after completing the race in 13 minutes and 21 seconds. Samantha Gonzales rounded out the Lady Cards outing with an 18th-place finish and a time of 15 minutes and 24 seconds.

The boys also competed at the meet with both varsity runners finishing in the top 50 on their side of the competition. Keegan Escamilla and Armondo Hernandez finished in 44th and 45th place respectively for the Cards. Escamilla completed his race in just a second over 26 minutes, while Hernandez finished 16 seconds later to take his spot just behind his teammate.

Columbus also had a JV runner for the boys as Ivan Hernandez took 33rd place with a time of just under 27 minutes.

The Cardinals will compete next on Aug. 31 in Schulenburg.
