EAGLE LAKE —Residents facing mobility challenges and a tight budget have a friend in Dale Alexander, head volunteer for the Colorado County Wheelchair Ramp Project.
Speaking before the Eagle Lake Noon Lions Club Jan. 12, Alexander discussed how his crew of 10 to 15 local volunteers built eight ramps last year and have 12 pre-built ramps that are free, safe, strong, durable and ready to distribute to residents.
“Dale and his crew of volunteers have been actively giving their time and talents to the community for the past few years,” said club official Gee Gee Erickson.
The Colorado County Wheelchair Ramp Project is associated with the Texas Ramp Project, a nonprofit providing free wheelchair ramps to low-income older adults and people with disabilities identified by local health care providers.
An organization spokesman said ramps are built without regard to race, religion, ethnicity, age or gender, and are constructed with volunteer labor, keeping costs to a minimum.

In addition, Alexander is also the owner of a volunteer- staffed resale shop, God’s Corner Store, 1010 Milam St., Columbus, located next to the Live Oak Art Center.
The shop provides clothing, appliances and furniture to those in need and resells items at a low cost. Last year, God’s Corner Store resupplied 12 homes that had been affected by house fires or flooding.
