COLUMBUS — The John Everett Chapter DAR awarded Donald Peikert a Community Service Award for his voluntary maintenance work at the Alleyton Cemetary.

The organization met Jan. 9 to formally honor Peikert. Randa Simmons, committee chair, introduced Peikert and gave a brief history of the Alleyton Cemetery, where she and Peikert both have family buried.

“At his own time and expense, Peikert spends hours at the cemetery cutting up and hauling off fallen limbs, tall bamboo and high weeds,” Simmons said. “He had both metal signs repaired or remade after they were damaged by tall trucks and installed a walk-through gate.”

She adds, “He is also getting rid of fire and leafcutter ants and repairing the fence. Although the Alleyton Cemetery has a caretaker to mow, there are many other jobs to do to make it look clean and well-kept.”

The chapter congratulated Peikert for a job well done, according to a release.
